Assessing Your Cross-Border Network: A Guide to Improving U.S.–Mexico Freight Performance

Carriers are selected, border crossings are established, and modes are chosen based on what worked at the moment. But as volumes shift, suppliers change, and risk increases, those decisions don’t always get revisited.

  • Can you track shipments in real time (or near real time) from Mexico pickup through U.S. delivery?
  • Is there a single platform providing end-to-end milestones visibility?
  • Are roles and responsibilities clearly defined at every handoff point?
  • Are exceptions identified early enough to prevent service disruptions?
  • Is visibility shared across stakeholders beyond the logistics team?

Border crossing selection is often based on proximity or legacy decisions, but strong strategies go much deeper. Performance is ideally continuously evaluated across key milestones, from pickup through import release.

When delays occur, teams with strong processes may be able to determine whether the issue is tied to a specific crossing or a broader process gap. They also have contingency plans in place, with alternate crossings identified and, where possible validated, not just assumed.

Questions to consider:

  • Do you know why your current border crossings were selected? Does that reasoning still hold?
  • Do you have visibility into each stage of the crossing process, not just final outcomes?
  • Can you distinguish between crossing-specific delays and systemic issues?
  • If your primary crossing were disrupted, how quickly could you respond and reroute?

As your business evolves, your cross-border network should evolve with it. That includes regularly reassessing mode selection, routing, and overall network structure based on actual shipment data, not default assumptions.

Strong networks are mapped end-to-end, with clear visibility into how freight moves from origin in Mexico to final delivery in the U.S. Mode decisions—whether FTL, LTL, intermodal, or consolidation—are typically made based on cost, service requirements, and risk tolerance at the lane level.

  • Have intermodal or consolidation opportunities been formally evaluated?
  • Is there a defined process to reassess the network as conditions change?
  • Are you confident each lane is using the most effective mode for your business?
